Today I volunteered with a cool program called Girls on the Run. GOTR is a non-profit education and fitness program for girls in grades 3-8. Participants work with volunteer coaches twice a week to learn about nutrition, body image, self-esteem, bullying, and best of all….RUNNING! Each lesson is paired with a structured coached run, and the girls work their way towards a 5K.
Today was not an easy 5K. It was the coldest day of the year and with strong winds the wind chill factor was down into the 20s.
These girls were determined to run today. In spite of bitter cold and fierce wind, each and every one of them finished a 5K.
GOTR likes each girl to run with an adult partner, so if no parent or adult friend is available, the girls are matched with volunteers. My friend Bethany came and we each ran with our own 3rd grader. Each finisher got a shiny new medal and there were lots of cheerleaders and volunteers along the way offering encouragement.
If you are interested in sharing the great love of RUNNING with a girl in your area, I encourage you to check out the numerous volunteer opportunities at http://www.girlsontherun.org
