Tomorrow morning we are running 20 miles. This will be the longest training run we complete. Next week we will taper down to 14 miles, then to 8 miles, and then the following week, it will be time for the Marathon.
In the Non-Runners guide from women, Dawn Dais points out (astutely) that in the post game interview, athletes never say “oh, yes. I trained for the 100 meter dash by running 75 meters” or “oh yes, I trained for the olympic hurdles by jumping over 3/4ths of the hurdles.” Various athletes have tried to explain this logic to me. You don’t want to overtrain. The excitement of the race will push you the last 6 miles. The force will be with you, padawan.
I’m not going to argue with any of this logic. I’m sitting at home watching the Texas game and carbo loading because 20 miles is nothing to sneeze at.
